Baby's Development

Your baby's brain is developing at an astonishing rate — around 100 new brain cells are being created every minute. The head is proportionally large compared to the rest of the body right now, which is completely normal at this stage.

Arm buds have grown longer and are starting to differentiate into upper arm, forearm, and a paddle-like hand shape. Leg buds are following a similar pattern slightly behind the arms.

The kidneys are starting to form, and the intestines are beginning to develop, though they're still outside the abdominal cavity at this point — they'll move inside in the coming weeks.

Changes in Your Body

Your uterus is now about the size of a lemon, even though there's no visible bump yet. Blood volume is increasing to support your growing baby, which can sometimes lead to lightheadedness if you stand up too quickly.

Nutrition This Week

Fiber-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can help with constipation, which becomes more common as progesterone slows digestion. Pair this with plenty of water.

If certain smells trigger nausea, cold or room-temperature foods often have a milder smell than hot meals and may be easier to tolerate.

🧘

Safe Exercises

Gentle stretching and short walks remain great choices. If dizziness is an issue, avoid standing up too quickly from sitting or lying positions, and stay well hydrated before any activity.

If you've already had your first appointment, your next one likely won't be for a few weeks unless you have specific concerns. Keep a list of questions as they come up so you're prepared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Increased blood volume and changes in blood pressure regulation during early pregnancy can cause lightheadedness. Standing up slowly and staying hydrated usually helps, but mention frequent or severe dizziness to your doctor.

Yes — hormonal shifts in early pregnancy commonly cause mood swings similar to PMS, but often more intense. This usually settles somewhat as the first trimester progresses.
