Growth & Development
Growth continues steadily. Many babies have grown noticeably longer and heavier since birth, and clothing sizes often need updating around now.
Key Milestones
- Rolling from tummy to back (or starting to)
- Reaching for and grasping objects intentionally
- Babbling with consonant sounds
- Holding head steady without support
- Showing interest in food when others eat
Sleep
The 4-month sleep regression is a commonly discussed phase where previously good sleepers may start waking more often, due to changing sleep cycle maturity. This is developmentally normal, even though it's exhausting for parents.
Feeding
Most babies are still exclusively on breast milk or formula at this stage — most pediatric guidance recommends waiting until around 6 months before introducing solids, though this can vary based on individual development and your doctor's advice.
Activities to Try
Many babies attempt their first rolls (often back to front, or vice versa) around this time. Provide supervised floor time on a safe, flat surface to encourage this movement.
Health Tips
If sleep has become more disrupted, try to maintain consistent nap and bedtime routines, even though it can be tempting to abandon structure during a rough patch.
Vaccination Info
If on the standard 3-dose primary series, the third dose of DTwP/DTaP, IPV, Hib, Rotavirus, and PCV is often due around this time, depending on your specific schedule.
