Growth & Development
Babies typically gain about 600-900 grams (1.5-2 lbs) in the first month and grow around 2.5-4 cm in length. Your pediatrician will track growth on a percentile chart at checkups — what matters most is a steady, consistent growth curve for your individual baby, not a specific number.
Key Milestones
- Beginning to smile responsively (sometimes called a 'social smile')
- Following objects with eyes
- Turning head toward sounds
- Brief periods of alert wakefulness
Sleep
Sleep is still largely unpredictable at one month, with babies sleeping 14-16 hours total across day and night in short stretches. Some babies start to have slightly longer nighttime stretches, but this varies enormously.
Feeding
Feeding frequency is similar to the newborn stage — every 2-3 hours for most babies. You may start noticing your baby settling into more predictable feeding patterns, though every baby's rhythm looks different.
Activities to Try
Continue daily tummy time in short sessions. High-contrast images, simple mobiles, and your own face remain the most engaging "toys" at this age — babies see best at close range (around 20-30cm) in the early weeks.
Health Tips
The first major pediatric check-up often happens around 1 month, covering weight, length, head circumference, and a general health assessment. This is a great time to ask any questions that have come up.
Vaccination Info
If the birth-dose vaccines were given, there typically isn't another scheduled vaccine until 6 weeks. Confirm your baby's vaccination card is up to date at this visit.
