Growth & Development
By 3 months, many babies have roughly doubled some of their early growth trajectory metrics. Head control is much improved, and your baby can likely hold their head steady when held upright.
Key Milestones
- Pushing up onto forearms during tummy time
- Opening and closing hands
- Bringing hands together
- Laughing and squealing with delight
- Recognizing familiar faces and voices
Sleep
Some babies begin showing early signs of a day-night sleep rhythm around this time, though this varies widely. Total sleep is usually still in the 14-15 hour range.
Feeding
If breastfeeding, your supply and your baby's feeding pattern have likely both settled into more of a routine. If formula feeding, your pediatrician can help confirm you're on an appropriate schedule and amount for your baby's growth.
Activities to Try
Tummy time can be extended to longer sessions as neck strength improves. Babies at this age often enjoy reaching for and batting at hanging toys, and tracking moving objects across a full range of motion.
Health Tips
Some babies start drooling more around this time as a precursor to later teething, though actual teeth are usually still months away. This drooling alone isn't a sign of illness.
Vaccination Info
If your baby is on a 3-dose schedule for DTwP, IPV, Hib, Rotavirus, and PCV, this is often around when the second dose is due, roughly 4 weeks after the first.
