Week 29: Baby's Muscles and Lungs Are Maturing
Your baby's muscles and lungs continue maturing this week, and head movement is becoming more controlled and frequent.
Baby's Development
Your baby's muscles and lungs are continuing to mature steadily. Head movements are becoming more frequent and controlled, and your baby may be turning toward sounds or light more deliberately now.
Brain growth remains rapid, with the surface starting to develop the grooves and folds characteristic of a mature brain, increasing surface area for the billions of neural connections forming.
Changes in Your Body
Your uterus is now well above your belly button, and many women feel the physical demands of carrying the extra weight more noticeably. Backaches and general fatigue are common at this stage.
Common Symptoms
Common at 29 weeks:
- Backaches
- Shortness of breath
- Frequent urination
- Swelling
- Heartburn
- Trouble sleeping
- Braxton Hicks contractions
Nutrition This Week
Continue eating small, frequent meals if heartburn or a feeling of fullness is bothering you — your stomach has less room as the uterus takes up more abdominal space.
Safe Exercises
A pregnancy support belt can ease some of the back and pelvic strain many women feel by this stage. Continue gentle exercise as tolerated.
Medical Checklist
This week:
- Consider a maternity support belt if back pain is significant
- Continue kick counting if recommended
- Pack a partial hospital bag if you haven't started
Doctor Visit Guide
Routine visits continue, checking blood pressure, fundal height, and fetal heart rate. Mention any new or worsening symptoms, especially swelling, headaches, or vision changes.
