Week 19: Vernix Caseosa Begins Forming
A waxy protective coating called vernix caseosa is starting to cover your baby's skin, and the senses of hearing and balance continue maturing.
Baby's Development
Vernix caseosa, a waxy, white substance, begins coating your baby's skin this week. This protective layer shields the skin from constant exposure to amniotic fluid and helps prevent it from becoming wrinkled or chapped before birth.
Your baby's sense of balance is developing in the inner ear, and movements are becoming more coordinated as a result. Brain regions responsible for senses like taste, smell, hearing, vision, and touch are developing specialized areas.
Changes in Your Body
Your uterus is now roughly at the level of your belly button. Many women feel consistent, recognizable movement by this point, often more active in the evenings when you're sitting still and more attuned to it.
Common Symptoms
This week, you might notice:
- Regular, recognizable fetal movement
- Increased appetite
- Stretch marks beginning to appear for some
- Lower back pain
- Mild swelling in feet and ankles
- Braxton Hicks contractions occasionally starting (though more common later)
Nutrition This Week
Continue a balanced diet, with attention to adequate protein intake (around 70-100g per day is often recommended in the second and third trimester, though individual needs vary) to support your baby's continued rapid growth.
Safe Exercises
If you're experiencing more back pain, prenatal-specific strength exercises focusing on the core and back muscles (in pregnancy-safe ways) can provide meaningful relief. A maternity support belt may also help some women.
Medical Checklist
Consider this week:
- Looking into prenatal massage if back pain is bothering you (confirm your therapist is experienced with pregnancy)
- Continuing to track movement patterns
- Starting to think about maternity leave timing if applicable to your work situation
Doctor Visit Guide
If you haven't had your anatomy scan yet, it's likely scheduled around now. Otherwise, routine visits continue at their regular interval, checking growth, blood pressure, and overall wellbeing.
